Now Hiring Sign Getting No Applicants? Add a Now Hiring QR Code

Infinite QR Team · Nov 6, 2026

Your “Now hiring” sign has been in the window for weeks, people walk past it every day, and almost nobody applies. A now hiring QR code lets interested walk-ins start an application from their phone right there on the sidewalk, instead of having to remember to come back.

Why “Now hiring” signs don’t bring in applicants

Plenty of people notice the sign. The trouble is what happens next:

  • There’s no easy next step. The sign says you’re hiring, but not how to apply. Walking in to ask feels awkward, especially during a busy shift.
  • The timing is wrong. People spot the sign on their way somewhere else. By the time they get home, they’ve forgotten your business name.
  • Paper applications are a hassle. Asking someone to fill out a form at the counter, with a borrowed pen, loses a lot of candidates.
  • The job details are missing. Without knowing the role, schedule or pay range, people don’t know if it’s worth asking.

A QR code on the sign turns a passing glance into an application started on the spot.

How to solve it with a now hiring QR code

  1. Decide where the code should go. You can send people to a short application form, or to a job listing or careers page you already use. A short form is quickest for walk-ins.
  2. Keep the form short. Ask only for what you need to follow up: name, phone or email, the position they want, their availability and maybe a line about their experience. You can collect more later in an interview.
  3. Explain the job clearly. Whether it’s on the form page or your listing, include the role, typical hours, location and how you’ll be in touch.
  4. Use a dynamic code. A dynamic QR code lets you point the same printed sign to a new form or listing when roles change, or to a “thanks, we’re not hiring right now” page when positions are filled.
  5. Write a direct call to action. “Now hiring: scan to apply in 2 minutes” is clearer than “Join our team.” Only promise a time you’ve tested yourself.
  6. Place the code at eye level. Put it on your window or door sign, by the register, on receipts or bags and on community bulletin boards.
  7. Make it big enough to scan from the sidewalk. People often scan a window sign from a few feet away, so size the code up and put it on a plain light panel.
  8. Check responses regularly. Set aside time each day or two to review new applications and reply quickly. Fast follow-up is one of the best ways to keep good candidates interested.
  9. Follow local hiring laws. Make sure your application questions and hiring process meet the rules where you operate.

See whether the sign is working

Dynamic codes record each scan with the date, time, approximate city and device type. If the window sign gets lots of scans but few completed applications, your form may be too long. If it gets few scans, try a bigger sign or a clearer call to action.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A long, desktop-style application. Long forms are hard to finish on a phone. Start short.
  • Leaving the sign up after you’ve hired. Update the destination or take the sign down so people don’t apply for jobs that are gone.
  • No follow-up. Applications that go unanswered leave a poor impression of your business.
  • Linking to a general home page. Send people straight to the application or job listing, not a page where they have to hunt for it.
  • Glare on the window. Test the code from outside at different times of day.

Troubleshooting

  • The code scans but the form is hard to use: open it on your own phone and cut any field you don’t truly need.
  • Scans from the window are failing: move the code lower in the glass, add a white backing and make it larger.
  • Applicants pick the wrong role: list each open position clearly, or use separate codes for separate roles.
