You put a yard sign out at every job and your company name is on the side of the truck, but the phone stays quiet. Neighbors notice your work; they just don’t stop to write down a number. A contractor yard sign QR code lets them request a quote, call you or save your details in one scan, right there on the sidewalk.
Why yard signs and truck signs don’t bring in calls
A sign at a job site is great exposure. The people walking or driving past are often neighbors with similar homes and similar projects. The trouble is turning that interest into action:
- Nobody carries a pen. People see the sign while walking the dog or getting out of the car and don’t want to type a phone number.
- Calling feels like a big step. Many homeowners just want a rough idea first and don’t want to be put on the spot with a sales call.
- It’s the wrong time to call. Evenings and weekends, when people are home to notice your work, are often when your office is closed.
- They forget your name. By the time the project becomes urgent, they can’t remember which company it was.
A QR code gives passersby an easy, low-pressure next step while your work is right in front of them.
How to capture quote requests from job-site signs
- Choose the action you want most. For quote requests, send scans to a short lead form. If you’d rather talk to people straight away, use a code that dials your number. If you want them to remember you, use a digital business card they can save to their phone.
- Keep the form short. Ask only for name, phone or email, address or neighborhood, and a one-line description of the project. Every extra question costs you responses.
- Write a call to action that fits the street. “Like what you see? Scan for a free quote” or “Your neighbor’s new roof. Scan to get yours priced.” Mention your trade so it’s clear what you offer.
- Size the code for distance. A yard sign is read from the sidewalk, not from a few inches away. Make the code as large as the sign allows, often 6 inches or more, and set it on a plain white panel. On a truck, put it at standing eye level on a flat panel, away from body curves and door seams.
- Use durable materials. Outdoor signs face sun, rain and dirt. Choose weather-resistant sign material and keep the code dark on a light background so it still scans as the sign ages.
- Use a dynamic code. A dynamic QR code lets you reuse the same signs across jobs and update where they point, for example to a seasonal offer, without reprinting.
- Check for new requests every day. Make it part of your routine to look at form responses each morning and evening, and call back quickly. Speed matters most when someone is collecting quotes.
- Get permission and follow local rules. Ask the homeowner before placing a sign, and check local and HOA rules about sign size and placement.
Compare jobs and trucks
Give each truck, or each batch of yard signs, its own dynamic code. Each scan is recorded with the date, time, approximate city and device type, so you can see which neighborhoods and vehicles get the most attention. Our guide to tracking QR code scans explains how to read those numbers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A code that’s too small. A business-card-sized code on a yard sign won’t scan from the sidewalk.
- Linking to your home page. A general website makes people hunt for the quote button. Send them straight to the form.
- A long form. Save detailed questions for the follow-up call.
- Codes on curved or ribbed panels. Truck body curves, door handles and rivets distort the pattern.
- Slow follow-up. A quote request answered days later has often already gone to someone else.
Troubleshooting
- Scans but few form submissions: shorten the form and make the offer clearer, such as a free estimate.
- The code won’t scan outdoors: check for glare from glossy laminate, fading or dirt, and make it larger.
- No scans at all: move the sign closer to the sidewalk and make sure the call to action is readable from there.
