QR Code Not Getting Scans? How to Track and Fix It

Infinite QR Team ยท Nov 6, 2026

“We put QR codes on everything, and I have no idea if anyone is scanning them.” Or worse: “I can see scans, but they’re barely trickling in.” Here’s how QR code tracking works, and how to use it to find and fix codes that aren’t pulling their weight.

Why it happens

You can’t see any scans

Only dynamic QR codes can be tracked. A dynamic code contains a short link: the phone opens it, the scan is recorded, and the visitor is sent on to your page in an instant. A static code, such as a WiFi or plain text code, stores its data inside the pattern, so the phone reads it directly and nothing counts the scan. If you printed static codes, there’s simply no data to look at.

You see scans, but very few

Low scans are rarely about the QR code itself. The usual causes are:

  • No clear reason to scan, or no call to action at all
  • A code too small for the distance people view it from
  • Poor contrast, glare or a code placed over a busy background
  • A placement people walk past without stopping
  • One code shared across several placements, so you can’t tell which one works

How to fix it: set up tracking and act on it

  1. Switch to dynamic codes. Create a dynamic QR code for anything you want to measure. If you’ve printed static codes, replace them or cover them with a dynamic sticker.
  2. Use one code per placement. Your window sign, table tents and flyers should each get their own code. Separate codes give separate stats.
  3. Name every code clearly. “Spring flyer – Midtown” is much easier to read in a dashboard than “QR 7.”
  4. Test, and note your own scans. Your test scans count too, so keep track of how many you made.
  5. Collect at least a full week of data. A day or two can be misleading. Compare full weeks when you can.
  6. Read the data (see below) and flag your strongest and weakest codes.
  7. Change one thing on the weakest code. Rewrite the call to action, make it bigger or move it. Change only one thing at a time so you know what helped.
  8. Repeat monthly. Small, regular adjustments add up.

What the scan data tells you

Each scan of a dynamic code can record the date and time, approximate location from the internet connection (country and city), device type and model, operating system, browser and browser language. Here’s how to turn that into decisions:

  • Total scans: is anyone engaging with this placement at all?
  • Date and time: when is your audience paying attention? Time promotions and staffing around it.
  • Location: which cities or regions respond? Useful for mailers and multi-location campaigns.
  • Device and operating system: test your landing page on the phones most of your visitors use.
  • Browser language: a noticeable share of non-English phones is a hint that translated pages or bilingual signs could help.

Location is estimated from the network connection, not GPS, so treat it as a trend rather than an exact address.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Zero scans everywhere? Confirm the code is dynamic and scan it yourself to check it works.
  • Good scans, no results? The problem is the landing page, not the code. Because dynamic codes are editable, point the code at a clearer, faster mobile page without reprinting.
  • Scans dropped suddenly? Check whether the code was covered, damaged, faded or moved.
  • One placement far ahead? Copy what works there (size, wording, height) to your other placements.
  • Promotion ended? Redirect the code to your next offer so the printed piece keeps working.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a single code for every placement, then guessing which one worked
  • Changing several things at once and not knowing which change mattered
  • Judging a code on a single day of data
  • Ignoring the landing page when scans are healthy but sales aren’t

How to do it with Infinite QR

Every dynamic code in Infinite QR comes with a short link and built-in QR code tracking. The Free plan includes 3 dynamic codes and 1,000 scans at no cost, enough to test a few placements side by side. Paid plans start at $1/month for 10 dynamic codes and 10,000 scans, and every paid plan keeps your scan stats with unlimited retention. Compare plans on the pricing page.
