The line at your window is long, half the people in it are squinting at a hand-written menu board, and regulars keep messaging you to ask where you’ll be parked tomorrow. A few well-placed QR codes on your truck can answer those questions before customers reach the window.
Why food truck lines get stuck
A food truck changes more often than almost any other business. That’s part of the fun, but it creates the same headaches over and over:
- Customers decide at the window. If the menu is hard to read from the line, people wait until they’re ordering to make up their minds, which slows everyone down.
- The menu keeps changing. Specials, sold-out items and seasonal dishes make printed menus go stale fast.
- Your location changes daily. Fans who loved your food last week don’t know where to find you this week.
- Payment questions slow the line. “Do you take cards?” or “Can I pay another way?” adds time to every order.
- Customers forget you. A great meal doesn’t turn into a repeat visit if people have no easy way to follow you.
How to solve it with food truck QR codes
- Put your menu on a phone-friendly page. Let people browse while they wait in line, so they’re ready to order when they reach you. Keep it to your core dishes and a clear price for each. If you’re working on a menu page, our guide to the QR code restaurant menu has more tips.
- Use dynamic codes for anything that changes. With a dynamic code, you update the page behind it instead of printing new stickers. That’s ideal for daily specials or a sold-out dish.
- Share today’s location. Give fans a code that opens your current spot on a map, or a page that lists your weekly schedule. Update it whenever your plans change, and the same printed code keeps working.
- Offer a payment option. A payment QR code at the window can give customers another way to pay. Check the payment provider’s rules and fees before you rely on it, and keep your usual payment methods available too.
- Help people follow you. A link-in-bio page with your social profiles, website and catering contact info gives customers one place to keep up with you.
- Place codes where people wait. Put the menu code on the side of the truck along the line, at eye level. Put the payment code right at the ordering window. Add the follow code on napkins, bags, stickers or receipts so it goes home with customers.
- Make them big and weatherproof. People scan from several feet away in a line, so size the codes up. Use durable, laminated or vinyl materials that can handle sun, rain and grease.
- Label every code. “Scan for the menu,” “Scan to see where we’ll be this week” and “Follow us” keep codes from getting mixed up.
Learn which stops bring the most interest
Dynamic codes record each scan with the date, time, approximate city and device type. Over a few weeks, that can give you a rough picture of which days and locations get more menu scans.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too many codes in one spot. Customers won’t know which to scan. Give each code its own clear job and location.
- Forgetting to update the location. An old address sends hungry fans to an empty parking lot.
- Codes in direct glare. Shiny vinyl in full sun can be hard to scan. Choose a matte finish if you can.
- Light codes on a dark truck wrap. Put each code on a light panel with a dark code for reliable scanning.
- Relying only on QR payments. Not everyone will want to pay that way, so keep other options open.
Troubleshooting
- The menu page loads slowly: cell signal at events can be weak. Keep the page simple and test it at a busy location.
- People scan but still ask questions at the window: check that prices and key details are easy to spot on the page.
- Codes stopped scanning: stickers fade and scratch outside. Inspect them regularly and replace worn ones.
