Customers Never Follow You Online? Make a Social Media QR Code

Infinite QR Team · Nov 6, 2026

You post on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok every week, yet the people who actually walk into your shop or pick up your flyer never seem to follow you. A social media QR code fixes that by turning “find us online” into a single scan that lands them on your profile, ready to tap Follow.

Why in-person customers don’t follow you

Most of your best customers would happily follow you. They just don’t, because getting there takes more effort than it should:

  • Handles are hard to type. Underscores, dots and numbers make “search for us” a guessing game, and similar accounts show up first.
  • A row of logos isn’t a link. Printing the Instagram and TikTok icons on a sign tells people you’re there, but not how to find you.
  • The moment passes. Customers mean to look you up later, then forget once they leave.
  • There’s no reason given. “Follow us” alone doesn’t say what they’ll get out of it.

A QR code removes the searching and typing, so following you takes a few seconds while the customer is still standing in front of you.

How to get more followers with a social media QR code

  1. Decide where you want people to go. If one platform matters most, send the code straight to that profile. If you’re active on several, send people to a single page that lists all of them and let them choose.
  2. Use your profile’s full web address. Open your profile in a browser and copy the link from the address bar, rather than typing the handle from memory. Then open the link on your phone to confirm it shows your account, not a lookalike.
  3. Use a dynamic code. A dynamic QR code lets you change the destination later, so if you rename your account, switch platforms or want to promote a new channel, the printed code keeps working.
  4. Give people a reason to scan. Pair the code with a short promise: “Scan to see new arrivals first,” “Follow for behind-the-scenes videos” or “See this week’s specials on Instagram.”
  5. Put it where people wait or linger. Good spots include the checkout counter, shopping bags, receipts, packaging inserts, table tents, the front window, flyers, menus and the back of your business card.
  6. Brand the code. Use your colors and keep the code dark on a light background so it scans reliably. On paid plans you can add your logo in the center.
  7. Size it for the spot. A counter sign needs a code around 1.5 to 2 inches wide; a window sign read from a few feet away needs more. Leave clear space around the code on all sides.
  8. Mention it out loud. A quick “We post our new stock on Instagram first, the code’s right here” at checkout does more than any sign on its own.

One platform or several?

If you’re on three or four platforms, a link-in-bio page is usually the cleanest choice: one code opens a simple page with a button for each profile, and you can add your website or online store too. We cover that approach in our link-in-bio QR code guide. If you want to push one platform hard, for example a TikTok campaign, a separate code pointing only to that profile keeps the message simple.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Linking to the app instead of the profile. A link to the platform’s home page or app store doesn’t help anyone find you.
  • Using a static code for a handle that might change. If the account name changes, a static code breaks and has to be reprinted.
  • Too many codes side by side. Three codes in a row confuse people and the phone may pick the wrong one. Use one code to a multi-link page instead.
  • A private or empty profile. Make sure the account is public and has recent posts before you print.
  • No call to action. A bare code next to a logo gets ignored.
  • Skipping the test scan. Always scan a printed proof with more than one phone.

Troubleshooting

  • The code opens a login screen: some platforms ask visitors to sign in before showing a profile. That’s normal; most of your followers will already be signed in on their phones.
  • It opens the wrong account: recheck the profile link you entered. If the code is dynamic, just fix the destination.
  • Plenty of scans, few new followers: make the reason to follow clearer and keep your profile active.
  • Not sure which spot works best: use separate dynamic codes for the counter and the bags, then compare their scan counts.

How to do it with Infinite QR

In the QR code generator, choose the Bio Links type to build a simple page with a button for each of your social profiles, or choose Dynamic URL and paste one profile link to send people straight there. Both types are available on the Free plan, which includes 3 dynamic QR codes, 1,000 scans, color customization and 4 shapes. Every scan is recorded with the date, time, approximate city and device type, so you can see which placements bring people in.

Paid plans start at $1 a month and add your logo inside the code, more dynamic codes, a branded short link domain and all 31 QR code types. To get started, create a free account.
