You use QR codes on your menus, signs and payment stands, and you’ve heard about QR code scams where fake codes send people to fake sites. Here’s how to keep your customers safe and your codes trustworthy.
Why QR code scams happen
A QR code is just a shortcut to a link or a piece of data. People can’t read the pattern with their eyes, so they have to trust it. Scammers exploit that trust in a few common ways:
- Sticker swaps: a fake code is stuck over a real one on a parking meter, menu, poster or payment sign.
- Fake payment pages: the code opens a convincing copy of a payment form that collects card details.
- Phishing messages: emails, texts or letters include a code that leads to a fake login page, sometimes called “quishing.”
- Fake notices: a card claims a missed delivery or unpaid fee and asks people to scan to fix it.
- Malicious downloads: the code pushes people to install an app from outside the official app store.
If one of your codes is tampered with, your customer gets hurt, but your business is the name they remember.
How to solve it: protect customers from QR code scams
- Inspect your codes regularly. Add a quick check to your opening or closing routine. Look for stickers over your codes or signs that look altered, and scan them yourself every so often.
- Make codes hard to tamper with. Print codes directly onto signs, menus and packaging instead of using stickers. Use clear covers or frames, laminate table cards and avoid unattended spots.
- Brand every code. Your logo and colors make your codes easier to recognize, and a plain sticker on top stands out. Branding doesn’t make a code impossible to fake, but it makes swaps easier to spot.
- Use a link customers recognize. Many phones preview the web address before opening it. A short link on your own domain gives customers a better chance of noticing when something looks off. Print the short link under the code too.
- Tell people what to expect. A line like “Scan to view our menu on our website” or “You should see our business name when you pay” helps customers catch a mismatch.
- Avoid surprise requests for sensitive information. Be careful about codes that lead straight to pages asking for passwords or card numbers. If you take payments by QR, explain the process clearly.
- Send people to secure, professional pages. Every destination should use HTTPS, load quickly and clearly show your business name.
- Watch your scan data. With dynamic QR codes, you can see scan activity over time. If a busy code suddenly goes quiet, check whether it has been covered or damaged. Learn more about QR code tracking.
- Train your team to know what your real codes look like, where they belong and what to do if a customer reports a strange page.
Safety tips to share with customers
- Check the web address preview before opening a scanned link.
- Be cautious of codes on stickers, especially on payment signs.
- Don’t enter passwords or card details on a scanned page unless you’re sure it’s legitimate.
- Download apps only from the official app store.
- When in doubt, go directly to the company’s website or call them.
Troubleshooting: you found a suspicious code
- Remove it right away and keep a photo for your records.
- Check your other locations for similar tampering.
- Let customers know if they may have been affected.
- Consider reporting it to local authorities.
- Replace the code with a tamper-resistant version.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Putting codes on stickers in unattended public spots.
- Using generic, unbranded codes that look like anyone’s.
- Never scanning your own codes after they go up.
- Sending customers to unsecured or unbranded pages.
- Assuming a code is safe forever once it’s printed.
